What we do
18BYTE is an independent AI intelligence publication. We cover what changed, explain why it matters, and help people choose the right model or product for a specific piece of work. Three things, done properly, rather than everything done thinly.
Our coverage falls into four parts. Breaking AI reports releases and decisions with the primary source attached. Explain defines the terms the industry uses loosely. The Models and Apps directories track what exists, what it costs, and what it is actually good at. Choose by Outcome starts from the job you need done and works back to the tool.
Who it is for
People who have to make decisions about AI and cannot spend their week reading release notes. Founders, operators, engineers, writers, analysts, and anyone whose employer just asked them what the company should be using.
We assume you are intelligent and busy. We do not assume you already know what a context window is, and we will tell you when a term is being used to mean two different things.
How we work
Every factual claim traces to a source you can open. Every product profile shows what evidence sits behind it and when we last checked. We do not publish a score out of ten, because the best tool for one job is rarely the best tool for another. Our editorial standards and review method set out the rules in full.
18BYTE Product Studio and One Conductor
18BYTE is also a product studio. We are building One Conductor, a system for coordinating several AI models on one request so their independent answers can be compared rather than averaged.
That is a conflict of interest, and pretending otherwise would undermine everything else on this site. So: One Conductor is disclosed wherever it appears. It is not entered into comparisons against products we review. It is not ranked. And coverage of competing products is not softened or sharpened because of it. If you ever think we have failed that test, write to us and say so.
