Assessment

What it does well

  • Free and already installed for most people through WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook
  • Positioned as small and fast by design rather than competing on raw capability
  • Can see and reason about what the user is looking at through Meta AI glasses

Where it falls short

  • Meta published no benchmark scores with the announcement
  • The context window is not disclosed
  • Closed, with only a stated hope to open source future versions, which is a notable retreat from the Llama era
  • No general API access

Privacy and data control

Meta's consumer AI data handling is governed by its own terms across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. We have not verified the training opt out position for this profile and would not recommend it for confidential material.

The longer read

The end of the Llama era

Meta Superintelligence Labs replaced the Llama family with the Muse line, and llama.com now redirects to Meta’s developer site. Llama 5 was never released. For anyone whose open weight strategy was built on Llama, that is a strategic problem rather than a naming change, and DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral, and Moonshot are now where the open weight momentum sits.
