CHOOSE BY OUTCOME

Best AI for Build Software

Compare AI coding assistants and models for writing, debugging, refactoring, and agent driven development.

BEFORE THE SHORTLIST

How to choose in this category

How to choose

The first decision is whether you are willing to change editor. If not, an assistant that works inside your existing IDE removes the adoption problem entirely. If you are, a purpose built AI editor gives you whole repository context that plugins struggle to match.

Watch the billing model

Almost every product here now separates unlimited completions from metered agent credits. Two developers on the same plan can have very different bills.

Check what happens when the credits run out. Some stop, and some move you to usage based billing without a hard ceiling.

If your code cannot leave your infrastructure

Open weight models have closed most of the capability gap. A permissively licensed model you host yourself is now a serious option rather than a compromise, and it removes the review that a security team would otherwise have to run on a third party.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

What each one gets right, and where it asks you to compromise

Best all rounder

ChatGPT

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • The widest feature range of any consumer AI product, covering research, files, data, images, and code
  • Deep Research and web browsing built in
  • Projects, memory, and custom GPTs make repeat workflows genuinely faster
  • Four price points, from USD 8 to USD 200, so you can match spend to use

Know before choosing

  • The number of modes and models is genuinely confusing, and the right one is rarely obvious
  • Usage allowances are per model rather than one pool, so heavy users hit caps they did not expect
  • Chat data trains OpenAI models by default and you have to go and turn it off

Privacy note

OpenAI states consumer chat data is used to improve its models by default. You can disable this under Data controls, using the Improve the model for everyone toggle.

Best for long form writing and code

Claude

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • The strongest default privacy position of the major assistants: consumer data is not used for training unless you opt in
  • Claude Code is included rather than sold separately, which is unusual value for developers
  • Excellent at long form drafting, structural editing, and reasoning over large documents
  • The free plan runs on Claude Sonnet 5, a frontier class model

Know before choosing

  • Usage limits apply on every tier, including Max, which Anthropic footnotes on its own pricing page
  • The Max tier price is quoted only as from USD 100 per month, so the 20x tier cost is not published
  • Less integrated web research than Perplexity or Gemini

Privacy note

Anthropic states consumer data is not used for model training unless you opt in through Model Improvement Privacy Settings, and Incognito chats are excluded even when that setting is enabled. This is the strongest default position among the major assistants.

Best for real time context

Grok

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Direct access to live posts on X, which no rival can match
  • Grok 4.5 posts strong published results on agentic coding benchmarks
  • A usable free tier

Know before choosing

  • xAI's SuperGrok Lite and Heavy tier prices are rendered by JavaScript on its pricing page and we could not read them
  • xAI's privacy policy explicitly tells users not to include personal information in prompts and states it cannot control what users submit
  • Prompts, searches, and responses may be used for training unless you turn the setting off

Privacy note

xAI states it may use prompts, searches, and Grok responses to train its models. You can turn off the Improve the model toggle under Settings and Data Controls, or use Private Chat. Its policy tells users not to include personal information in prompts.

Best free reasoning

DeepSeek

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Strong reasoning performance at no cost in the consumer app
  • API pricing is roughly a thirtieth of the Western flagships
  • The underlying V4-Flash weights are MIT licensed, so you can self host and avoid the data question entirely

Know before choosing

  • There is no consumer paid tier, so there is no plan with better data terms to upgrade to
  • DeepSeek states it stores personal data in the People's Republic of China
  • The training opt out is by email to privacy@deepseek.com rather than a setting, which is a meaningful practical barrier
  • DeepSeek warns a significant API price increase is expected

Privacy note

DeepSeek states it collects text and voice input, prompts, uploaded files, and photos and uses them to train and improve its machine learning models, stores personal data in the People's Republic of China, and provides a training opt out only by emailing privacy@deepseek.com.

Best in your existing editor

GitHub Copilot

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Works in every major editor rather than requiring you to switch to a new one
  • A real free tier at 2,000 completions per month with no card
  • Unlimited completions on all paid plans, with credits covering chat and agents on top

Know before choosing

  • Chat, agents, and CLI draw on a finite monthly credit balance, so only completions are truly unlimited
  • As of 24 April 2026 the Allow GitHub to use my data for AI model training setting is enabled by default for Copilot Free, Pro, Pro+, and Max, covering inputs, outputs, code snippets, and context
  • Business and Enterprise are excluded from training, but individuals are not

Privacy note

GitHub documents a setting named Allow GitHub to use my data for AI model training which, as of 24 April 2026, is enabled by default on all individual Copilot plans. Individuals opt out by setting it to Disabled. Business and Enterprise plans are excluded from training entirely.

Best for whole repository work

Cursor

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Built around whole repository context rather than single file completion
  • Cursor states it does not use your inputs or its suggestions to train its models, and does not permit third parties to
  • Free Hobby tier with no card required

Know before choosing

  • It is a full editor, so adopting it means leaving your current one
  • Paid tiers are defined by included model usage, and exceeding it moves you to usage based billing rather than stopping
  • The jump from Pro to Ultra is USD 180 a month, which is a serious commitment for an individual

Privacy note

Cursor states it does not use inputs or suggestions to train its models, nor permit third parties to, except where flagged for security review, explicitly reported by the user, or explicitly agreed to.

UNDER THE HOOD

The models worth knowing for this work

These are engines rather than products. Relevant if you are building something, or if you want to know what the products above are actually running.

HOW TO DECIDE

Choosing without regret

You have the comparison. This is how to turn it into a decision you will not want to reverse in a month.

Measure it on your own repository

Every product in this category performs well on a greenfield file. The useful test is an unfamiliar part of your own codebase: ask for a change that touches three files and see whether the result compiles, whether the tests still pass, and whether you can follow what it did.

Price the agent work, not the seat

The seat price in the table is the smaller number for most teams that use agents seriously. Run one realistic agent task, look at what it consumed, and multiply by how often you expect to do it. That figure is the one worth comparing.

Keep the review step

The failure mode in this category is not bad code, it is plausible code that is merged without being read. Whatever you choose, the diff still needs a human on it.
