Google is separating long-range scientific leadership from day-to-day AI execution. Demis Hassabis will serve as chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu will lead Google DeepMind while continuing as Google’s chief AI architect.
Why it matters
The structure gives Hassabis more room to focus on frontier science and Google’s longer-term AI direction, while placing model delivery and organizational execution under a leader already responsible for AI architecture. The real test will be whether the change speeds the path from research breakthroughs to products people can use.
