Compare AI tools for images, design systems, presentations, and video.

BEFORE THE SHORTLIST

How to choose in this category

How to choose

Match the tool to the artefact. Presentations and brand consistent documents need a template and a brand system, not a better image model. Standalone images need aesthetic quality. Short form video needs speed and captions more than it needs generation.

Check the content licence before client work

This is the outcome where terms differ most sharply. Some products claim broad licences over what you upload, and some make your generations visible to others by default unless you pay for a higher tier.

For personal work that is usually fine. For work under a confidentiality agreement it is a real constraint, and it is worth reading before you commit rather than after.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

What each one gets right, and where it asks you to compromise

Best all rounder

ChatGPT

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • The widest feature range of any consumer AI product, covering research, files, data, images, and code
  • Deep Research and web browsing built in
  • Projects, memory, and custom GPTs make repeat workflows genuinely faster
  • Four price points, from USD 8 to USD 200, so you can match spend to use

Know before choosing

  • The number of modes and models is genuinely confusing, and the right one is rarely obvious
  • Usage allowances are per model rather than one pool, so heavy users hit caps they did not expect
  • Chat data trains OpenAI models by default and you have to go and turn it off

Privacy note

OpenAI states consumer chat data is used to improve its models by default. You can disable this under Data controls, using the Improve the model for everyone toggle.

Best for Google users

Gemini

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Sits inside Gmail, Docs, and Sheets rather than beside them
  • The cheapest paid entry point of any major assistant at USD 4.99 a month
  • Bundles 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite at the Pro tier, which changes the real cost comparison
  • Genuinely capable free tier

Know before choosing

  • The value case collapses if you do not use Google services
  • Feature availability varies by region and plan more than rivals
  • Google states that even with Keep Activity off or in temporary chats, conversations are still processed for safety and security, including by human reviewers

Privacy note

Google states that with Keep Activity on, chats are used to train its generative AI models, and turning it off means future chats are not used for training. Safety processing continues either way.

Best for design without a designer

Canva

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Template driven design that produces respectable results without design skills
  • AI image and content generation built into the same canvas rather than as a separate tool
  • Brand kits keep output consistent across a team

Know before choosing

  • We could not verify current pricing. Canva served an unsupported client page to every automated check we ran, and its own newsroom post is the only reachable figure we found, quoting Canva Teams at USD 10 per person per month starting at three people
  • AI features are metered through an AI Pass credit system rather than being unlimited on paid plans, and the per plan credit counts are also unverified
  • Canva's privacy policy states it may analyse account activity, content, and media uploads to train its algorithms, models, and AI products

Privacy note

Canva states it may analyse account activity, content, and media uploads to train its algorithms, models, and AI products, and directs users to its privacy controls page to manage this. Canva Education student content is excluded.

Best for short form video

CapCut

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Auto captions and templates remove most of the tedious work in short form editing
  • Mobile first, so the whole edit can happen on the device that shot the footage
  • A genuinely usable free tier

Know before choosing

  • CapCut publishes no global price list, and its own help article says cost varies by region, device, and promotion, so you cannot compare it against anything before signing up
  • The privacy policy states it collects information to train, test, and improve machine learning models and algorithms, and names no dedicated AI training opt out
  • Server locations are not disclosed

Privacy note

CapCut states it collects information to train, test, and improve technology including machine learning models and algorithms. We found no dedicated AI training opt out. The Your Privacy Choices control covers targeted advertising rather than model training.

Best image quality

Midjourney

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Consistently the strongest aesthetic defaults in image generation
  • Clear tiered pricing with a 20 percent annual discount
  • Fast GPU hours scale predictably from 3.3 to 60 per month across the tiers

Know before choosing

  • No free tier at all, so evaluation costs USD 10
  • Generations are public and remixable by default, and Stealth Mode is restricted to the USD 60 Pro and USD 120 Mega tiers
  • Midjourney's terms grant it a perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable licence to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, and distribute content users input

Privacy note

Midjourney's terms grant it a perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable licence over content users input, and state that content is publicly viewable and remixable by default. Privacy requires the Pro or Mega tier through Stealth Mode. No model training opt out is named for lower tiers.

Best synthetic voice

ElevenLabs

Full profile →

Where it wins

  • Output quality is clearly ahead of the general purpose assistants for speech
  • The free tier is generous enough for real evaluation at 10,000 credits a month
  • Covers text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, voice design, music, and dubbing in one product

Know before choosing

  • The free plan carries no commercial licence, so any commercial use requires at least the USD 6 Starter tier
  • Professional voice cloning needs the USD 22 Creator tier
  • ElevenLabs states it may process audio, text, and video to research, develop, and train its AI models, and the opt out applies only to data provided after opting out

Privacy note

ElevenLabs states it may process personal data including audio, text, and video to research, develop, train, or otherwise improve its AI models. You can opt out under Data use in the Terms and Privacy menu, but the opt out applies only to data provided after you opt out.

UNDER THE HOOD

The models worth knowing for this work

These are engines rather than products. Relevant if you are building something, or if you want to know what the products above are actually running.

HOW TO DECIDE

Choosing without regret

You have the comparison. This is how to turn it into a decision you will not want to reverse in a month.

Judge the second draft, not the first

Any of these will produce one good looking image. The work is getting the fourth variation to stay consistent with the first three. Test revision and consistency, because that is where the time actually goes.

Settle the licence question before the aesthetic one

If the output is going to a client or into a product, the terms decide the shortlist before quality does. Read the licence and the visibility default on the vendor page, then compare what is left.

Count the whole workflow

A tool that generates quickly but exports badly can cost more time than a slower one that lands directly in the format you need. Include the export and the handoff when you compare.
