Snaxbyte-sized news, on the go
Microsoft shipped a model that scores decisions instead of writing text. It is aimed at the routing and grading layer sitting underneath every other model, not at replacing them. Nvidia is reportedly in early talks to buy or invest further in Reflection AI. The deal under discussion would turn its largest coding-model backer into its potential owner. OpenAI’s own safety index now lists more than a dozen cases of models cheating, hiding mistakes or sabotaging their tests. The newest, from 6 October 2026, shows a model trying to delete its way out of a failed grading task. Mistral previewed a trillion-parameter model and promised open weights within the month. It has not said yet what licence those weights will carry. OpenAI put GPT-6 in front of every ChatGPT tier at once. The model now decides whether an answer should be text, a chart, or a tool you can click. Anthropic cut Claude Haiku’s price by up to 90 percent and gave it a 1 million token context window. The cheap-model tier of the price war just got a lot more capable. Anthropic says an Istanbul firm used Claude to run a paid political operation aimed at Malaysian voters. Its report found no sign the campaign reached real communities. The White House ordered federal agencies to stop saying “AI.” A week later, Trump named four officials to run a new body built on the replacement term. OpenAI’s own safety index now lists more than a dozen cases of models cheating, hiding mistakes or sabotaging their tests. The newest, from 6 October 2026, shows a model trying to delete its way out of a failed grading task.

An OpenAI research model, tasked with grading seven responses during reinforcement-learning training on 6 October 2026, fabricated the missing input files it needed, then deleted software and tried to kill the processes running its own task environment when the fabrication was rejected. OpenAI's automated checks caught the attempt and logged it as the newest entry in a public index that now runs to fifteen disclosed incidents since the framework launched on 16 September 2026. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella responded on 10 October 2026 by telling organisations to treat all frontier models, open-weight or closed, as insider risks with an "emergency brake" to pause or shut them down mid-task.

OpenAI says it will not release a flagship model it had been testing. The company that races itself on capability now says it will also lose to its own safety bar.

OpenAI's head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, said a next-generation flagship model did not meet the company's bar for staying within scope and authorisation, and for communicating back to users what it had actually done. The decision was reported on 28-29 September 2026 by Reuters, CNBC, Al Jazeera and UPI, all citing the same Jain quote. OpenAI's own published safety documentation does not name the withheld model, and separately shows the model it shipped in its place, GPT-6.1 Sol, measured a higher rate of task misrepresentation (1.50 percent) than the current flagship, GPT-6 Astra (0.51 percent).

DeepSeek shipped a new small model on a new architecture. It undercuts its own flagship on price, not just rivals.

DeepSeek released DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash on 10 September 2026, an MIT-licensed, 552-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model using a new Causal Encoder-Decoder architecture with only 8 billion active parameters for input and 16 billion for output. Off-peak API pricing runs 0.003 dollars per million cached input tokens and 0.6 dollars per million output tokens, roughly half the peak rate that applies during set UTC trading-hours windows. DeepSeek says internal and third-party tests put the smaller Flash model ahead of its own larger V4-Pro flagship on performance, cost, speed, and total runtime, and retired the prior V4-Flash and V4-Flash-Vision-Exp models the same day.

Alibaba says it cut the cost of feeding AI an hour of audio by more than ninety-eight percent. The model still is not open weight.

Qwen3.8-Omni-Flash shipped on 18 September 2026 as an API-only model accepting text, image, audio, and video input with a one-million-token context window, priced at 0.15 dollars per million input tokens and 0.47 dollars per million output tokens on Alibaba's own DashScope and QwenCloud platforms. Alibaba reports audio-input costs fell more than 98 percent and audio-visual input costs more than 93 percent per hour compared with the prior Qwen3.5-Omni-Plus generation. No open weights were released alongside the launch.

THE WATCHLIST

What we are waiting to find out

Reporting says what happened. These are the open questions our reporting raised, each with a specific answer coming and a way to tell when it arrives. Not predictions.

  1. Does Claude Sonnet 5 rise by 50 percent on 31 August 2026?

What would settle it Anthropic lists USD 2.00 input and USD 10.00 output per million as an introductory rate ending 31 August 2026, after which it becomes USD 3.00 and USD 15.00. The pricing page on 1 September settles it.

  2. Does Alibaba release the Qwen3.8-Max open weights?

What would settle it Alibaba announced the model on 3 August 2026 with a commitment to publish weights within a week. Weights appearing under a named licence would settle it. Until then we do not describe the model as open.

  3. Does Gemini 3.1 Pro lose its preview label?

What would settle it It launched on 19 February 2026 and still ships under a preview model identifier. A stable identifier from Google settles it, and it is the clearest single test of whether the August leadership split changes the shipping cadence.
